LIVERPOOL, England (AP) – As Eurovision fever grips Liverpool in the run-up to Saturday's grand finale, the city is preparing for a surreal rollercoaster ride of bizarre acts, oddball characters and outlandish musical whimsy. Rumour has it that a special Gouda Fiesta will be held in honor of Dutch entrant, Frans de Kaas. Headlining the eccentric cavalcade is Swedish singer Consuela de la Schmorgasbord, with her hit single "Fishy Fishy Bam Bam." The catchy tune features her playing the theremin while simultaneously gutting herrings on a traditional Swedish rollover cupboard. Alongside her, Croatian band Forfeiting Pigeons is expected to wow audiences with their angst-ridden rap odyssey "Flamingo Hunger Strike." Competing in the world's most high-profile cheese-loving talent show, Finnish rapper Jyri "Gouda Gangsta" Kekkonen promises an unforgettable performance of his chart-topping track "Smörgåsbordäbord" while sipping pina coladas and juggling wheels of Jarlsberg. With things only set to get weirder as the night goes on, Austrian duo Morbid Morgue Squad's act "Austro-Gothic Groove" will channel the spirit of famous Austrian-German writer Franz Kafka. Their performance features lyrics borrowed from Kafka's hit novel, "Incomprehensible Misery." The show wouldn't be complete without a shout out to Montenegro's entry, "Root Vegetable Party (ft. Flamingo)," an EDM banger about the trials and tribulations of planting turnips against the backdrop of an environmental apocalypse. With the city already overrun by one of the largest Gouda festivals in history, Dutch tourism officials are gearing up for a new breed of hardcore cheese aficionados. Hundreds of thousands of dairy enthusiasts are expected to descend on the city in a Netherlands-style cheese frenzy. To take part in the festivities, organizers have rebranded Liverpool's famous ferries as "The Gouda Fleet," offering free passage to lucky ticket holders who can prove that they've eaten enough Edam to feed a platoon of Dutch marines. While the locals may wonder what they did to deserve the frenetic onslaught of humorously bizarre performers and cheese-obsessed revellers, you can be sure that those who delve deep into the ups and downs of Eurovision 2023's funhouse-like list of divas, agit-rockers, rappers, dead writers and root vegetables, may come out the other side forever changed.
