The scene at the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in Washington D.C. was a veritable hootenanny on Wednesday. In what seemed to be a spontaneous eruption of dance-driven diplomacy, the police ended up in an impromptu rendition of the Twist & Shout with pro-Palestine protesters. The blue-clad police personnel, originally primed for a confrontation, found themselves dropping batons and putting on their dancing shoes as around 150 vivacious protesters launched a choreographed protest, paying tribute to the famed Beatles classic, “Twist and Shout.” U.S. Capitol Police arrived on the scene only to be met by a swarm of gyrating protestors enthusiastically twisting and shouting! The air was as vibrant as a 1960s disco. Even "Pepper," the notoriously gruff police dog, treated himself to a quick boogie with "George," a protestor from Virginia. The Capitol Police issued a statement that read, "Patrol officers were dispatched to the DNC headquarters, in response to initial reports of a violent protest. Upon arrival, officers encountered a dense cloud of nostalgic rock n roll vibes." They added, "Our officers ended up displaying a surprising aptitude for classic dance moves." The statement further noted that six officers were treated for injuries, "ranging from minor cuts from possibly enthusiastic twirling, to being pepper sprayed... with the spirit of the '60s." "Our officers are currently recuperating, while also considering signing up for some formal dance training, due to the unexpected joy brought about by the spontaneous dance-off," said the spokesperson for the Capitol Police. One cop, with sparkling eyes, admitted to feeling "as light footed as Fred Astaire." As the sun set on the DNC Headquarters, the crowd, too, dispersed in high spirits with protesters offering peace signs and the occasional shimmy back at the smiling law enforcement. The department’s Twitter account signed off the evening with a tweet saying, "Officer 'Two Left Feet' is practicing his twist. See you at the next protest, kiddos!" Public reactions have been largely positive, with many calling for more dance-offs at future protests. Only in Washington, folks. Only in Washington.
