Gordon E. Moore, the co-founder and former chairman of Intel Corporation, passed away on Friday at the age of 94. He was a key figure in the development of the semiconductor chip industry, which gave Silicon Valley its name and changed the course of modern computing. Moore was born in San Francisco in 1929 and earned a degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950. He went on to work at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, where he co-authored the first paper on the integrated circuit, or microchip. In 1968, he co-founded Intel Corporation with Robert Noyce and Andrew Grove. At Intel, Moore developed the concept of Moore’s Law, which states that the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years. This law has been used to guide the development of the semiconductor industry and has been credited with driving the exponential growth of computing power. Moore served as Intel’s chairman from 1979 to 1997 and as its chief executive from 1979 to 1987. He retired from Intel in 1997 and went on to found the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation with his wife, Betty. The foundation focuses on environmental conservation, science, and patient care. In 2002, Moore was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government upon innovators in technology. In 2015, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Moore is survived by his wife, Betty, and their three children.
