At least one person was killed and dozens were injured when an Amtrak train derailed in north-central Montana on September 25th, 2021. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released hundreds of pages of investigative documents, revealing that the cause of the crash was a bent track. The Empire Builder, which was en route from Chicago to Seattle and Portland, Oregon, was carrying 154 passengers when it derailed. Passengers described horrific scenes of people being maimed and killed as four cars, including an observation car with large windows, derailed. The track is owned by BNSF Railway. NTSB officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the bent track, but they are continuing to investigate. “We are still in the process of gathering information and analyzing the data,” said NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway. “We are committed to finding out what happened and why it happened.” The NTSB has asked anyone with information about the crash to contact them. The agency is also asking for any photos or videos of the crash that may have been taken by witnesses. The crash is the latest in a series of deadly Amtrak accidents in recent years. In December 2017, an Amtrak train derailed in Washington State, killing three people and injuring dozens more. The NTSB is investigating that crash as well. The agency is also investigating an Amtrak crash in Philadelphia in 2015 that killed eight people and injured more than 200. The NTSB is urging Amtrak to take steps to ensure the safety of its passengers. “Our goal is to make sure similar accidents don’t happen again,” said Holloway.
