A British hacker known as 'PlugWalkJoe' is set to be extradited to the United States to face charges related to the alleged hacking of Twitter accounts of celebrities and politicians. Joseph James O'Connor, 23, was arrested at his Costa del Sol home in July 2021 and has since refused to be transferred to the US voluntarily. On Thursday, Spain's Audiencia Nacional in Madrid said it had agreed to hand O'Connor over to American authorities. The accounts O'Connor is accused of hacking include those of former US President Barack Obama, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and reality TV star Kim Kardashian. O'Connor's lawyer, Miguel Angel Lopez, said he would appeal the ruling. "We are disappointed with the decision of the court," Lopez said in a statement. "We are convinced that Joseph is innocent and we will continue to defend him." O'Connor is accused of using a technique known as "SIM swapping" to gain control of the accounts, which he then allegedly used to solicit Bitcoin donations from followers. The US Department of Justice has said O'Connor is facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and aggravated identity theft. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
