At least 26 people have been killed and 85 injured after a passenger train and a freight train collided in northern Greece early Wednesday morning. The collision happened around 6:30 a.m. local time in Tempe, about 235 miles north of Athens. At least three of the train cars derailed and caught fire, trapping many of the passengers inside. Hospital officials reported that 25 of the injured people have serious injuries. Rescue teams are still working to evacuate passengers from the scene. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in a statement on Twitter. “I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the horrific train accident in Thessaly,” he wrote. “The government is doing everything in its power to provide the necessary assistance to the injured and the families of the victims.” The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
